You start with a set amount and spend some to build buildings. Your main resource is, essentially, greenery. While this process is pretty and you’ll want to just make the entire map green, it’s important to keep in mind that this is still a management game. Additional buildings let you fill dried rivers with fresh water, perfect for fish to call home again. The first has you place down buildings that detoxify the land and water it so grass can grow and trees can spring to life. To that end, each game is split into three phases. Your main job is to fill this wasteland with nature and then leave without a trace, the only thing left behind being a verdant field of life.
It’s gray, full of dead trees, rocks, and dried-up riverbeds. It’s easy to be pessimistic about our future, but Terra Nil is at least a small slice of hope amidst it all.Rather than starting with a lush area full of nature and life, each procedurally generated map in Terra Nil is a complete wasteland. But I personally loved that even Terra Nil itself is about entering, making a positive impact, and leaving. Maybe that’s not as in-depth or infinitely playable as some strategy heads might want from a city-builder.
It does just what it needs to, and moves on. It’s a small-scale, unique city-builder that is short and sweet. When all’s said and done, you leave, and nature remains. The final coda to your clean-up campaign is touching, though, and puts a sweet bow on the efforts you’ve made. Terra Nil offers some replayability, in additional levels and challenges, though seeing the credits roll can happen fairly quickly if you’re on a roll. You can see how the thunder and rain have returned to a region, pouring new life into the soil. You can see all the wildlife living in habitats you built. So then, at the end, you can click that “Appreciate” button and watch a montage of your new land.
